What remains after the cut and the cost
Print-on-demand royalties are what remains after the platform's share and the production cost, both of which are taken from the list price. At the defaults, a 20 list price with a 60% platform cut and 7 production cost leaves 1. Raising the list price to 25 on the same production cost would leave 3, because the production cost is fixed while the cut scales.
Why thin margins move so sharply
The margin is thin enough at the defaults that small changes matter disproportionately. A one-unit rise in production cost removes the entire royalty, and the platform's percentage varies by marketplace and product type rather than being uniform. The figure is also per unit and gross: it sits before any tax on the income and takes no account of advertising spend, which is the most common way a nominally positive royalty becomes a negative one.

Methodology
This calculator computes your royalty per unit sold by subtracting two costs from the list price. It first applies the Amazon cut percentage to your list price to determine the platform fee. It then subtracts both this fee and your production cost from the list price to arrive at your royalty. The model assumes a flat percentage fee structure and treats production costs as constant per unit. It does not account for refunds, returns, payment processing delays, tiered fee structures, or variation in production costs across different product types or order volumes. Results represent the per-unit royalty before any taxes or additional seller fees.
